S is for Sow

You reap what you sow.

We start hearing that as children–trying to make us work hard and do things the “right” way.

And on the surface it seems like good advice. You only get out of something what you put into it. But I’m not sure I think life works that way all of the time.

Maybe it works with crops. But not even then always. Droughts, storms and insects can all affect them even if all of the work has been done properly.

It’s the same with everything else. You can do everything the way you are “supposed to,” and things still don’t always work out the way you expect. Even more confusing? The right way isn’t even something that people agree on.

And is there really a right way? There are so many paths that we can take and life experiences are different on each one. They all have positives and negatives that add to our repertoire of skills and knowledge.

My path hasn’t been a straight line and how boring would that be? I’m still trying to figure out where I want to be and that’s a huge part of life.

Even worse? It feels like if things go well, it’s not work, but luck in someone else’s eyes, but if things go poorly, it is your fault. It can’t go both ways and it isn’t true. Sometimes good things happen in spite of what we mess up and sometimes bad things happen no matter how hard we try to do the right thing.

What’s the point, Charmer?

Maybe we all just need to remember that life is hard and that throwing platitudes at people isn’t really helpful. We just need to be kind and understand that we are all doing the best that we can.
