This isn’t “technically” about dragons–but dragons figure into both The Hobbit and The Silmarillion, so they are within the Tolkien world.
We visited New Zealand in March 2017 for our anniversary. It was a cruise of both islands starting and ending in Sydney. One of the stops was Canterbury where we did a Lord of the Rings tour.
We chose not to see the Hobbit houses, but instead went out to where they filmed the scenes for Rohan. It was absolutely breathtaking with the mountains rising up out of the plains.
This site was almost not found by the scouting crew–it was just luck that they managed to come over the peaks just as they were getting ready to give up for the day. I’m sure if you are a LOTR fan, you can see exactly where everything was during filming.
And, of course, we got to do the tourist thing and take pictures with swords. It was almost as big as I am! It was a once in a lifetime experience that I am so glad that we had the chance to do.
In case we haven’t already shown what giant nerds we are with other things, and to complete the dragon piece, this is in our guest room.
Oh gosh, it’s so cool that you have been there!

It was amazing!
That must have been so amazing! Rohan looks like a magical place. Thanks for sharing 😊
It was absolutely breathtaking
Maybe only once in a lifetime and it will be possible to visit such epic places. And it’s good that you succeeded.
Ever since watching The Lord of the Rings I’ve wanted to visit New Zealand. Perhaps one day, far in the future, I’ll be able to again! Fingers crossed. It sounds like you had an amazing time.
I hope you do too. It’s a fabulous place to visit
And where is the photo with swords?
🤣 🤣 🤣
Can’t really edit them down for the site
Very cool. I would love to visit New Zealand 🇳🇿! But I would have to visit Hobbiton! lol. Those little houses are too cool for me to miss!
We could only choose one but that would have been cool too
